The Zelome Welfare Union Kohima (ZWUK) today celebrated its 25th Anniversary at the SIRD Auditorium, Kohima, under the theme “Embracing Legacy, Envisioning Progress.”
Gracing the occasion as the special guest, Nagaland’s Power and Parliamentary Affairs Minister KG Kenye expressed concern over the declining trend of traditional virtues in modern society. “We are fast losing something our forefathers closely associated with, honesty. We are losing some of our best virtues and character,” he regretted, describing honesty as the most valued virtue.
Kenye stressed the need to re-cultivate reliability, integrity, and honesty. “There is no dearth of money in this world,” he said, adding that corporate houses, industrialists, and governments across the globe look for individuals with integrity, honesty, and reliability for investment.
Highlighting the inherent values of the Chakhesang community, Kenye said, “Chakhesang people possess qualities like simplicity and honesty. Let us not lose them. The world is looking for such qualities. Let us harness, groom, practice, and share them with those around us, especially within Naga society.”
Stressing responsible use of technology, he added, “This is the age of technology. We must use gadgets wisely to gain maximum benefit.”
Chakhesang Hoho Kohima president Dozhohii Tunyi extended greetings and urged the Zelome community to be good ambassadors of the Chakhesang tribe. “Continue to do good work and make your neighbors feel comfortable with you,” he said.
Zelome Village Council chairman Sasu Krome also exhorted the gathering to uphold the community’s values.
‘Envision a future that builds on our legacy’
ZWUK president Vipanyi Krome said the celebration reflects the resilience, unity, and vision of the community. “It is not just recognition of the years gone by; it is a celebration of a journey born out of faith, sacrifice, and a shared dream,” he said.
Calling for a forward-looking vision, Krome added, “This anniversary calls us to envision a future that builds upon our legacy—a future where our union continues to grow in wisdom, service, and strength; a future where our youth are empowered, traditions are preserved, and no member of our community is left behind, whether they live in the remotest village or the busiest part of the capital.”
A new ZWUK team for the 2026–2027 tenure was announced, with Revikrhu Zholia as president and Vipulu Domeh as general secretary, among others. The programme was chaired by Daniel Domeh, while Neingulie Krome delivered the welcome address.
Zelome Village is a Poula-speaking Chakhesang community under Phek district. Today, ZWUK comprises 56 households with a total population of 274 residing in Kohima town.
