
Chümoukedima, June 26 (MExN): The observance of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was held at Shalom Rehabilitation Centre (SRC), Chümoukedima.
The guest of honour, Colonel CH Jacob, 7 Assam Rifles exhorted the inmates on the road to recovery stating that ‘recovery can take place when there is conviction and will power with determination and God connection.’
Speaking on the need and role of the families and caregivers in our society who need to monitor the persons after the treatment programme, the Col said, “We live in an environment where availability of these substances makes people more vulnerable and easy prey for addiction.”
He stressed on the importance of having healthy recreation activities in villages and colonies that will keep the adolescents engaged in purposeful activities.
Dr Simeon, Neurosurgeon from Faith Hospital, Dimapur educated the inmates at SRC on the health complications of substance abuse. He explained how substances affect the brain and other organs of the body. Dr Simeon shared his experience of meeting people with physical complications due to addiction to alcohol and drugs.
During the interaction with the inmates, he also cleared doubts on physical health issues they face due to addiction. Dr Simeon urged them to focus on the recovery so that whatever was lost can be regained through counselling and psychotherapies provided in the treatment centre at Shalom.
Rev Fr Dr Joe Mariadhas, Director, SRC in a press release stated that on the occasion, three inmates completed their course and are joining their families to begin a new life.
