DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 22 (MExN): The Western Sumi Students’ Union (WSSU) has asked the Dimapur Deputy Commissioner to put restrictions on establishments selling liquor in Dimapur.
In a representation to the Dimapur DC, WSSU President, A Kughato Achumi and General Secretary, X Hinoka Chophi said that “night pubs/clubs, hotels, restaurants and freelance shops remain open 24x7 catering and promoting sale of liquor to people under the pretext of running a business.” “Many youngsters, especially students are becoming victims of these ill-realties,” it added.
The WSSU reminded that “Dimapur comes under the purview of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1989 and 32 years have passed since the NLTP Act was enacted but Nagaland today is a dry state only on paper.”
“The ground realities are known to everybody and particularly to the District Administration and Excise Department and yet the Department has chosen to sleep over it. Be it Excise Department or any other department so established under the Government of Nagaland is not supposed to become proactive solely on the conditions of being fuelled by public ultimatums. But it is the sole responsibilities of the upholders of the law to ensure that what has been passed as legislation is implemented in letter and spirit,” the WSSU said.
The WSSU urged the district administration to put restrictions at the earliest on those mentioned “illegal activities running under the pretext of running a business, which is affecting the lives of thousands of people.”
