Retain Dimasa villages in Dimapur district: DPO

DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 27 (MExN): The Dimasa Public Organization (DPO) while congratulating the Rengma, Sumi and the Chakhro Angami communities for the newly created districts of Tseminyu, Niuland and Chümoukedima, has urged the Nagaland Government to retain the Dimasa villages in Dimapur district.

A press release from the DPO said that the Dimasa people “nurture a strong emotional and inseparable attachment with Dimapur because of our historical past.” “Merging of Dimasa villages of Dhansiripar Sub-Division with the Chümoukedima District and retaining Dimasa Villages around Dimapur with Dimapur district will further marginalize the Dimasa into micro-minority,” it reasoned.

Further, the DPO recalled that during the creation of the State of Nagaland “the visionary Naga leaders most unambiguously kept not only the Dimasa in one constituency but also kept other communities such as Mech, Garos and Gorkhas under Dimapur-3 constituency so as to protect their rights and privileges.”

“Therefore dividing those communities into fragmentation putting them in different districts will ambiguously defeat the very concept of protecting the interest of the tribe envisioned by the founding leaders,” it added.

The DPO pointed out that ever since the inception of the State, creation of districts and sub-divisions “were invariably based on ethnicity.” As such, the DPO said that the Dimasa (Kachari) inhabited areas “should not have been even thought of dividing into pieces.”
