Reward for brave cop

Dimapur, June 1 (MExN): Responding to a concerned citizen’s contempt at the reported miserable “Rs.500 reward” for brave policeman Sakumeren Jamir, the Superintendent of Police of Dimapur today said the police establishment has “rewarded him with some cash.” The amount of the stated ‘cash reward’ was not mentioned in the SP’s rejoinder received here today. UBC Jamir was in the news recently for bringing down an armed element who had also attempted to shoot the policeman in Dimapur on May 19.

The rejoinder from the Dimapur police noted a letter from a concerned Naga citizen that was published in The Morung Express earlier, where the police establishment was criticized for the reported ‘Rs.500 reward’ said to have been given to the policeman for his courageous act.

The SP clarified that UBC Sakumeren Jamir of the District Executive Force (DEF) of Dimapur was offered promotion to the rank of ‘Naik’ for “his participation” in capturing one Angam Zeliang on May 19. However, Jamir refused the promotion. Still, the Nagaland Police Headquarters as well as the SP office of Dimapur “rewarded him with some cash in appreciation of his act.” The rejoinder did not mention the amount. A “citation for reward” in the form of Governor’s commendation certification is also in the process, the SP added.

It may be worth mentioning here that citizens of Nagaland – themselves long suffering at the rising crime in the state – have been expressing frustration at the “Rs.500 reward” reportedly given to Jamir for his act of bravery. In fact, ever since this daily broke the “Rs.500” reward story, thousands of citizens, especially the youth, on the internet have been on the warpath. From the relentless tirade of citizens on The Morung Express website to international social networking sites like Facebook, Myspace and Hi5, criticism and call for ‘better treatment’ for brave hearts like Jamir have been up and about. In fact, the frustration and outrage is so much so that the biggest social networking portal in the world, Facebook, has now even a social group called “More for Sakumeren” floated by concerned citizens.
