Two fishermen are seen fishing with an improvised low-volt battery on the Dhansiri River, near a village under Dhansiripar of Dimapur District. A lifeline for large populace along its path, River Dhansiri originates from the Laisang peak in Peren district and flows through a distance of 352 km (219 miles) from south to north before joining the Brahmaputra on its south bank, according to a Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) report. The river receives almost all the western and southern drainages of Nagaland. Dhansiri was among the 60 river stretches identified by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) as polluted based on biochemical oxygen demand in different north-eastern states. According to NPCB, the polluted stretches are tributaries & drains of Dhansiri and downstream of Dimapur city. In September 2019, the NPCB had submitted an “Action Plan for Rejuvenation of River Dhansiri, Dimapur, Nagaland Priority – I” to CPCB. (Morung Photo)
