RNPC submits two-point memo to Amit Shah

•    Demands immediate creation of Rengma Hills Autonomous District
•    Creation of an MLA seat reserved for Rengmas

Dimapur, June 8 (MExN): Rengma Naga Peoples’ Council (RNPC), Karbi Anglong, Assam has submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister, Amit Shah demanding “immediate creation of Rengma Hills Autonomous District with Hqs at Phentecho by upgrading the existing Bokajan Sub-division and creation of an MLA seat reserved for the Rengmas.”

The memorandum appended by RNPC, President, Solomon Rengma and General Secretary, Chento Rengma stated that the Rengma Nagas have been submitting memoranda to the government for many years for creation of autonomous district for Rengmas and non-Karbis. “However, it has been unfortunate that the matter has been prolong delayed till date. Justice delayed is justice denied.”

The Council stated that Assam government has recently announced to sign accord with the Karbi militants with “bigger packages without taking into account the legitimate rights of the sons of the soil or the Rengmas and other communities. Provision of autonomous district under the 6th Schedule of the constitution of India has pushed the Rengmas into the dark side of democracy which the government fails to see.”

Meanwhile, the RNPC also presented to the Union Minister details of historical background of Rengma Nagas with the appeal “to not ignore and not overlook the legitimate historical facts before taking concrete decision but consider the same for peaceful coexistence among the people.”
