Over 100 patients were screened during a free medical check-up for back-bone related illnesses on May 3 and 4 at Kohima and Dimapur respectively.

Organised by the district Rotary Club members, the free screening was conducted by a super specialist spinal surgeon from the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, New Delhi, Dr Neeraj Gupta.

Providing a brief overview of the event, Dr Nitin Agarwal, Project Chairman of Rotary Club Dimapur shared that patients were screen mainly for back pain, neck and spine related issues.  “We (Rotary Club) try to do free medical camps every year for common health issues,” he said. With back bone related illnesses becoming one of the most common health issue in this day and age, he noted that this camp is specifically aimed at providing consultation and remedies to the patients.

Dr Agarwal also mentioned that as the State did not possess a good spinal surgeon/ specialist, Dr Gupta was invited from Delhi for this free screening, who is himself a Rotarian.

“The idea of this check-up is to help patients change their life-style habits, encourage them to do more exercises and provide basic medicines,” he said. Those whose conditions require further treatment are then given recommendations by the doctor for follow up check-up.

At Kohima, 38 patients have been screened while about 70 patients have been registered for the check-up.

In previous years, Dr Agarwal reported that the club has successfully given free medical health camps for children born with congenital heart disease as well. “We send them to Raipur at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani hospital free of cost, including travel expenses,” he shared.
