Dimapur, November 26 (MExN): A teacher of Sainik School, Punglwa in Peren district was shot and injured by two unidentified persons on November 26. The teacher identified as Saurabh Kumar Jain, in his twenties, was shot in the neck from behind.
According to sources, the incident occurred around 7:30 am – 8:00 am Saturday between Punglwa and Jalukie, Peren Road. He was proceeding to Gaili, a neighbouring village, from the Sainik School campus on his motor-cycle to fetch milk for his infant child. It was his daily routine, the sources said.
Recounting the events leading upto to the shooting as narrated by Jain, who could still communicate, the sources said that he was stopped by two men some few hundred meters away from the school’s main entrance towards Jalukie. The two men then asked Jain for a lift till Gaili. While they were talking, one of the men got behind him and shot him, leaving him for death, and escaped on his motor-cycle (NL 07 J 0794). They are still absconding.
Jain, with shrapnel lodged inside his neck was taken Medziphema PHC from where he was shifted to ZHRC, Dimapur. Since, his wound required a complicated surgery; doctors referred him to GNRC, Guwahati. The injury however is said to be not life threatening.
An FIR was lodged at Jalukie Police Station. Motive, if any, behind the shooting could be ascertained. A massive hunt is on to nab the culprits.
Home Minister Imkong L Imchen has condemned the incident. He stated that it was an attempt to murder and should be condemned by all. “Such perpetrators should not have place in our society,” Imchen stated. While expressing concern and sympathy with the victim, the Home Minister assured that the SP and DEF Peren have launched a massive hunt to nab the culprits. He appealed to all citizens to extend cooperation and information to catch them.
The Sainik School Parents Association, Punglwa has expressed shock over the incident. The association has vehemently condemned the life attempt on the teacher and urges the concern authority to immediately book the culprits at the earliest and award befitting punishment. The association said that the threat on teachers equally endangers the life and the careers of children and should be condemned by all.
The Old Boys Association of Sainik School, Imphal (Nagaland Chapter) and the Zeliangron Students’ Union Nagaland have also condemned the incident. The organisation/ union have also appealed the concerned authority to book the culprit at the earliest.
