Tuensang, August 10 (MExN): The Cultural Committee of Sao Chang College, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), observed the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples at the college multi-purpose hall on August 9.
Arenla, Principal of Eklavya Model Residential School, Tuensang, was the guest speaker. She noted that the Nagas are fortunate to live in a land they can call their own, unlike many indigenous communities whose lands have been ceded or who have been displaced. She stressed the importance of preserving traditional knowledge of sustainable practices to protect land, water, and natural resources, and to live in harmony with nature amid ongoing environmental degradation.
Calling for culturally grounded innovation, she said Artificial Intelligence should be developed to empower indigenous communities. Drawing parallels with Japan’s blend of ancient traditions and modern influences, she highlighted how Japanese culture has had a rich impact on the world and said indigenous peoples must keep their cultures alive to influence the world positively.
The programme was chaired by Hotoni Yeptho, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology. The welcome address was delivered by Yanglikumla Sangtam, Assistant Professor, Department of Education. A folk fusion presentation was performed by 3rd Semester students of the Department of Sociology, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Vethono Medeo, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics.
