Satisfy demands of the Naga public: JCPI to govt committee

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 20 (MExN): The Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI) today expressed hope that the committee formed to look into the concerns of illegal immigration in the state headed by a senior bureaucrat will “fully satisfy the demand of the Naga public.”

A press note from the JCPI media cell informed on August 18, it had submitted a representation to the Chief Secretary, and a meeting along with his colleagues including the Home Commissioner, Special Secretary Home, and the Director General of Police along with Addl DGP was held, whereupon a committee headed by Abhishek Singh, Commissioner and Secretary to the Chief Minister was immediately formed.

The said committee was asked to give an interim report within 15 days on comprehensive action plan and mechanisms to streamline ILP and to effectively curb illegal immigrants and to bring out a strong policy to safeguard the rights and security of indigenous inhabitants of the state of Nagaland as a consequence of the ongoing NRC drive in Assam, it added. The JCPI said that it urged the formation of ILP monitoring cell and Foreigners Tribunal to deal with the influx.

JCPI members also requested the committee to visit the RTAs and the Municipal Councils/town committees in the districts with regard to random issuance of Driving Licenses and Trade Licenses to suspected illegal immigrants thereby allowing these people to capture the market and the transport business. The JCPI also felt that as an experimental measure, the issuance of ILP in Dimapur should be handled by the police Commissionerate Office rather than the office of the Deputy Commissioner (DC).

It also raised the issue of non- indigenous people serving as GBs, particularly "suspected illegal immigrants in Dimapur area," the JCPI added.
