Search begins for new NU Vice Chancellor

With agitations from both students and teachers calling for acceptance of Professor GD Sharma’s resignation intensifying by the day, a name-list of professors, probable incumbents for appointment as the new Vice-Chancellor has been submitted to the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India by the Nagaland University.

Highly-placed sources in the university informed that the names of three senior-most Professors in the university were submitted to the MHRD March 10. The three university lecturers recommended for selection are, in order of seniority, Professor BS Chauhan, Professor Lanunungsang Ao and Professor VB Singh. The Under Secretary, MHRD had faxed a communication to the Nagaland University last week on the matter and subsequently, the names of the three were submitted March 10.  However, while the Ministry has also acknowledged receipt of the three probable incumbents, a list of all NU professors was also requested to be dispatched for assessment, the sources added. 

Meanwhile, following the destruction of NU Kohima Building by the Post-Graduate Students Union (PGSU) Monday, the PGSU, Lumami Campus, followed suit today proceeding to devastate the entire administrative block. It was informed from Lumami that the students residing in the campus itself gathered at around 11:00 AM and began pelting stones and tearing down signboards, doors and windows. Furniture, fences, window panes, corridors and telephone/electric posts were damaged as well as computers and a few office gadgets. However, the students did not touch the paperworks in the offices or the library either, it was informed. Additional information said that in the event the demand remained unmet the students would target the various constructions being erected in and around the campus.

PGSU-L President Along said that that the extreme step was taken since all diplomatic and democratic approach had been exhausted. He added that further steps on agitation would be chalked out only later after assessing the situation.
