‘Seed replacement ratio below 15% in Nagaland’

Dimapur, November 1 (MExN): A training programme on participatory seed production of toria and field pea was conducted at Dhansiripar village of Dimapur district on October 26. The training was conducted by ICAR Nagaland Centre, Medziphema in collaboration with KVK, Dimapur, to impart ‘know-how’ for high quality toria and field pea seed production.

A press release from ICAR, Nagaland Center Joint Director, ICAR Nagaland Centre stated that, seed replacement ratio is below 15% in the state, mainly due to reliance on informal seed system with use of seeds of traditional varieties. Productivity of toria and field pea in the state is also low. Therefore, increasing the area under improved varieties may enhance the production and productivity of the state to achieve self-sustenance in production of various crops, the release added.

During the programme, Dr Harendra Verma, Scientist, Plant Breeding and Genetics, ICAR Nagaland Centre, Medziphema highlighted the importance of quality seed materials. He also trained the farmers for seed production technology measures such as time and distance isolation, rouging, timely weeding and proper storage. 

Dr Roben Singh, SMS, KVK, Dimapur encouraged the farmers to participate in the high quality seed production technologies to meet local seed demand. He trained the farmers in regards to field preparation for toria and field pea, importance of line sowing, timely weeding, split fertilizer application, etc. for realizing potential yield of toria and field pea in their fields. 

Seed of improved toria variety TS-36 and TS-67 and field pea Aman variety was distributed to the 40 farmers of Dhansiripar village for seed production under the participatory seed production programme of ICAR Nagaland centre.
