Phek, December 8 (MExN): A one-day seminar on “Generation Equality” was held at Academic building, Phek Government College. The keynote address was delivered by Dr Vizovol Mekro, Principal, Phek Government College.
Eminent writer, author and poet, Dr Easterine Kire spoke at length on the theme as the resource person. She elaborated that generation equality involves prevention and ending violence against women and moving towards gender equality and empowerment of women.
She stressed that keeping the thought of feminism in mind, the general perspective of generation equality might be thought of as a feminist agenda. Paraphrasing the Beijing Declaration of 1995, Dr Easterine explained that one should voice out the empowerment of women as the empowerment of society.
Extracting examples from her two novels, 'A Terrible Matriarchy', and 'A Respectable Women,' she delved spoke on the topic, concluding her discourse by saying that "Generation Equality” in our context is a matter of practicing respect and balance.
A short speech was delivered by Sachin Jaiswal, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Phek who supplemented that the seminar was an important discourse to spread awareness amongst the masses.
He shared that for a progressive society, representation of women in politics was imperative which is lacking in Nagaland. He informed the existence of various centers and schemes for empowerment of women and for protecting the dignity and ensuring safety of women in India such as One Stop Centre: Nirbhaya Fund and Pradhan Mantri Mahila Shakti Kendra. He encouraged the college to organize such workshops in the future which will be beneficial for students and the society at large.
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Thejotalu Nienu, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Phek Government College.
