Septic tanks rankles pollution board’s attention

Dimapur, July 27 (MExN): The callous practice of draining septic tanks into public drains has compelled the Nagaland Pollution Control Board to call for “complaints, share experiences and views” on how to solve the problem.
“It has come to the notice of the Nagaland pollution Control Board that some households let off their septic tanks directly into the drains. In some cases people construct their latrines on top of drains/nullahs and the faecal matter are directly let off into drains which is leading to air pollution because of the smell and water pollution in the downstream,” the board said in a note today.
In the hill stations, the board reminded, the effluents flow from the drains to the natural streams that are utilized by people living in the lower locations thus, increasing the possible spread of waterborne diseases. “Foul smell during letting off latrine into drains is such that there are a lot of complains from people in the neighborhoods,” stated the note, appended by Rusovil John, member secretary of the board.
All concerned citizens are requested to present their complaints, share experiences and views on how best the problem can be tackled.
“Your valuable opinions may be sent to npcb2@yahoo.com or to the office address: Nagaland Pollution Control Board, Signal Point, Dimapur 797112, which will be studied and forwarded to the authorities for necessary action,” the board stated.
