Dimapur, March 9 (MExN): A new health sub-center at Signal Angami Village, Dimapur was inaugurated on March 9 by Dr T Pangjung Sangtam, Chief Medical Officer Dimapur.

Dr Sangtam emphasized the important role a health sub-center plays for the community. He said that, although a sub-center provides the basic health care facilities, it is the first step towards tracking one’s health and preventing various diseases in the future. Most of the prevalent diseases in our society today are caused not by communicable diseases, but mostly by the choice of lifestyle we make. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading cause of many ailments today, he said.

However, regular check up and early detection can help prevent major diseases, Dr Sangtam said, adding that adults who are 30 years and above, should monitor their BP and blood sugar regularly to track their health.
He further requested the village authorities to clearly demarcate the land allotted to the Medical Department so that future developments can be facilitated without any hindrance.

While presenting the report on building construction, the Secretary of Signal Angami Village Council (SAVC) stated that establishing a health center in Signal Angami village was a long held dream of the community. It was only due to the hard work and efforts of late Thenico Sangtam, Former Chairman of Signal Angami Village Health and Sanitation that the dream has become a reality, the Secretary said.

Due to his efforts, a health sub-center was added in the 2015-16 Health Action Plan and in 2017, the creation of a sub-center was finally approved. The construction of the main building took only 6 months, however, the final completion such as electrification and plumbing, could be done after a long gap due to financial constraints. While lamenting that the pioneer of the health sub-center could not see the final completion and the inauguration of his endeavor, the Secretary said that his efforts will be remembered by the community.

Earlier, a minute’s silence was observed for late Thenico Sangtam before the function commenced.

Dr N Simon Dzuvichu, Chairman SMC, in his welcome address assured the Department that the community of Signal Angami will take ownership of the sub-center and will support and co-operate with the Department so that the health care needs of the people will be met. He also requested the Department to provide all necessary resources that is entitled to a health sub-center.

Sashi Longkumer, Member, SAVC while appreciating the Department for creating a health center at Signal Angami, also appreciated the pioneers and village authorities of Signal Angami village for their foresight and vision to bring in facilities and demarcating the plot of land for the benefit of the villagers.
