Alleges human rights violations by security forces in Naga villages bordering Myanmar
DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 5 (MExN): The NSCN (IM) has alleged of human rights violations by the Indian army in the villages of Mapum, Sahamphung, Chamu and Phungtha located in the interiors of Ukhrul districts of Manipur bordering Myanmar.
An MIP release stated that the Indo-Naga political talks that has passed twenty two (22) long years makes very little differences to many Naga villages in Manipur “all because of the double standard policy followed by the Government of India.”
The MIP alleged that four villages have come under the control of Indian army personnel that have stationed themselves in government school buildings for more than a month. It alleged that the students are in disarray and teachers helpless lest they earn the wrath of the security forces.
According to the MIP release, the village authorities appealed the army to vacate the classrooms as the final examinations are around the corner but it only fell on deaf ears.
Questioning how a peaceful solution can be expected in such prevailing volatile solution, the NSCN (IM) further alleged that security check gates have been established to frisk every passer-by, villagers going to fields questioned, and anyone found extending hospitality to NSCN members beaten black and blue.
It lamented that for the Nagas of these villages, the Indo-Naga ceasefire has no meaning because they still live under the direct control of the Indian security forces empowered by the Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
“The comfort of the impending inclusive Naga political solution was never made to reach the villages, clouded by the presence of Indian armed forces personnel. These sorts of atmosphere leave much to be desired as it only reflects the insincerity of the GoI,” it stated.
The NSCN (IM) also observed that Ukhrul district headquarters of late is seeing the pre-ceasefire days with the presence of Assam Rifles personnel taking to frisking any passers-by and vehicles.
This is far from what is envisaged under the ongoing Indo-Naga political talks just nearing completion pending giving finishing touch to the competencies, it added.
Maintaining that ceasefire between the NSCN and GoI and the Indo-Naga political talks cover all the Naga territories irrespective of artificial boundaries created by the British Government and GoI, the NSCN (IM) therefore said the outcome of the ongoing Indo-Naga political talks will naturally impact all the Naga territories.
Consequently, creating a conducive environment in all the Naga territories in India and Myanmar has become a necessity, it said.
Taking the prevailing scenario into account, the NSCN (IM) said it doubted the seriousness and sincerity of the GoI in dealing the Naga issue. “It is imperative that GoI should immediately stop the cruelty and restore confidence between the two entities, otherwise, things may go beyond what GoI can expect,” the NSCN (IM) stated.
