KOHIMA, AUGUST 14 (MExN) The Students’ Council of St Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama, on August 13 undertook a large-scale voluntary work drive at the Phesama landslide site in collaboration with the National Service Scheme SJC(A), St Joseph’s College (A) Men’s Hostel and Jesus Youth SJC(A).

According to a press release, the programme began at 10.30 am with a briefing by Students’ Council president Kakito K Awomi, who said the drive aimed not only to rehabilitate a footpath damaged by persistent landslides but also to serve as a peaceful appeal to authorities to address chronic road hazards.

“We want to confront the reality at the grassroots, bear witness to what is truly occurring, and ensure those responsible understand the sustained impact these conditions have had on our college and community,” he said, adding that media coverage has often overlooked institutional accountability.

Following a prayer led by the vice-president of the Students’ Council, work commenced at 11 am, with National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) officials present at the site.

Over three hours, 410 student volunteers cleared debris and carried out repairs to make the passage safer for pedestrians and local residents. In his closing remarks, Awomi thanked all participants and expressed confidence that their efforts would prompt lasting change.
