SJU webinar discuses copyright and patents issues

Dimapur, September 2 (MExN): With the aim of creating awareness about the copyrights and patents as well as encourage the student’s community to file patents, a one-day webinar on “Process of Filing Patents” was organised by the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), St Joseph University on August 31. 

Dr  Asha Kadam, Assistant Professor of Botany, Dada Patil Mahavidyalaya, Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, who was the chief guest and resource person at the webinar,  used both  of motivational and informational videos as well as images to induce the innovative skills and thinking abilities of the students, a SKU release informed. 

Giving an overview of the patent application and filing process, she noted that to protect one’s invention or idea,  a patent, trademark, copyright, marketing plan, trade secrets, or some combination, these are pertinent.  

Before preparing a patent application, find out if one needs a patent or some other form of Intellectual Property protection, she noted, adding that one cannot get a patent if the invention has already been publicly disclosed.

Accordingly, a search of all previous public disclosures nationally as well as foreign patents and printed publications should also be conducted,  Dr Kadam informed. 

She also explained the patent application guidelines with the detailed legal requirements for filing the type of Patent Application with the fee structure and duration taken to get a patent. Besides, questions on patent rights, kinds of inventions and duration of the patent protection rights were shared during the webinar.
