The All Sumi Students Union (SKK) has send out a strong warning stating that it would be keeping a close eye on the functioning of government establishments to curb malpractices and negligence.
The new team of the SKK for the 2022-24 tenure, led by President Katho P Awomi, told a press conference in Dimapur on March 12, that the Union’s thrust area would be to ensure the proper functioning of government-run schools, besides other government offices, in Sumi inhabited areas.
It particularly pointed out known and prevailing practices but going unchecked, and that which, must be plugged.
Taking serious note of the menace of proxy teachers and the plight of the education system in the state, the union stated that they were taking this course of action after seeing no positive results.
He said, “Students are facing the problem of proxy teachers. No one should teach on behalf of the teacher appointed (in the school). Those who do not want to attend class may retire,” while adding that the Village Education Committee must ensure there are no proxy teachers.
The SKK also took strong exception to the practice of teachers getting attached to legislators or to other government departments and transferring of teachers with post. While demanding that it must be stopped, Awomi highlighted rightful allocation of Midday Meal and other schemes, as per the guidelines. “We are not going to compromise on these,” he said.
While it called upon teachers not to affiliate with any political party, he added that teachers should not involve in other activities and jobs that take a toll on the main teaching job.
The government was also asked to take action non-performance and improving the quality of academic performance, especially in government schools.
While stating, “We will support the School Education Department on this,” Awomi added, “We want quality education, so we appeal the government to take positive measures in this regard.”
Among its other list of demands, the union also requested for the immediate introduction and implementation of engineering degree at the Kelhoshe Polytechnic Institute, Atoizu.
Condition of roads was another area of concern pointed out. It said that RTI applications will be filed in the coming days, especially on roads constructed or repaired over the past 5 years. “If there are any loopholes, it should be rectified or done away with within one month.”
While it called for proper functioning of government offices, it reminded that SKK executives would be giving surprise visits to offices located in the rural areas.
In order to ensure that all the issues are resolved, Awomi appealed, “We kindly request any individual or groups to contact this office against any discrepancies with government schools or institutions.” The student body also gave instructions to their federating units to comply with the resolutions.
It was further informed that the General Union Assembly of the SKK would be held soon where issues of public concern relating to roads, clean election, wildlife protection and “solution before election” will be up for discussion.
