Social media network sites put on vigilance

Taking strong exception to “unsavoury and communal” comments against the Sumi tribe in social networking sites, the Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) has resolved to take action against administrators of social media networking sites posting inflammatory and unsavoury comments in the future.

This was one of the resolutions adopted by WSYF at a joint coordination meeting with young Sumi intellectuals and entrepreneurs at Anaki Conference hall on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference after the marathon meeting, WSYF members led by their president K Kakiye Zhimomi and general secretary Mughavi Chishi displayed to the media specimen of inflammatory remarks and comments against Sumi community in social networks and said posting of such comments was tantamount to cyber crime.

WSYF said it would lodge complaint with police to give directive to social networking sites to block such messages and comments. “If such things recur, then administrators of networking sites or blogs will be answerable to WSYF”, the youth front cautioned.

WSYF also resolved to take initiative in coordinating with police to curb anti-social activities and crimes committed by few Sumi youths in Dimapur, thereby tarnishing the image of the tribe as a whole. “This is to show that Sumi in general do not support the anti-social activities committed by some erring Sumis”, the youth front said.

On the August 15 assault case where one Issac Yepthomi was “brutally assaulted” by IRB (Mahila) personnel on patrol in Dimapur, WSYF reiterated its earlier ultimatum to the police that the erring personnel be identified and suspended within 15 days (with 31 August as deadline). The youth front said that if police fail to meet its demand, then WSYF would resort to own course of action as stated earlier.

WSYF asked police personnel on vehicle-frisking duty that they should not ask the vehicle owners or passengers the “tribe or community” to which they belonged as in many cases such things lead to “discrimination.”

WSYF cautioned that if such assaults on tribal lines recur, then it would be compelled to even “individually target” officers responsible.

“We urge law enforcing personnel to impart justice irrespective of tribe and to unnecessarily harass citizens on tribal lines”, the youth front said.

Further, WSYF alleged that some police officers conduct frisking under influence of alcohol and said that under such circumstances, it becomes impossible to reason with the officers.
