DIMAPUR, JULY 21(MExN): City Law College Students’ Union Dimapur (CLCSUD) observed its first annual day on Saturday (July 21) with Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) president, Savi Liegise, as the chief guest of the day.
The chief guest in his address expressed hope that the college would prove to be a great institution to churn out students who would become future guardians of law. Savi said that in a world full of injustice, society has great need for people who have sense of justice and who wants the world to be a better place to live in.
The NCD president said in Nagaland, especially Dimapur, where conflicts and clash of interests are the order of the day, those in the legal profession can play a vital role in ensuring that all communities in the commercial hub (Dimapur) co-exist side by side in harmony.
Principal of City Law College, Leonard Aier, in his address dwelled on the menace and impact of illegal migrants in Nagaland state and stressed that Nagas should be wary of the illegal migrants who have penetrated Naga society to the core.
Stating that history has proved that in many instances slaves have become the masters, Aier cautioned the same would come to pass, vis a vis Nagas and illegal migrants, if Nagas are not careful.
The Law principal impressed upon the students that a good citizen is not necessarily a “law-abiding citizen” but one who is conscious of his rights and ready to defend not only his right but that of others too.
“Today what we see in our land is that those people who are alien to our culture and identity are slowly taking over Naga society”, Aier said and added that though there may be “isms” and differences among the Naga tribes, yet when it comes to the burning issue of illegal migrants, Nagas must sink their internal differences and unitedly fight the menace of illegal migrants.
Elaborating his point, Aier said that for the better part of his life and career he was based in Assam where he gradually witnessed the illegal migrants making inroads into Assamese society and claiming nearly 30% seats in the Assam legislative assembly. The principal pointed out that one of the fundamental duties of a good citizen, especially the law students, is to take measures to protect the “land” which has sustained them for generations.
Later, the law students had a healthy debating hour on the topic “Impact on illegal migrants on politics and economics of the Nagas.”
