The State government has come up with a novel idea to motivate the public to save power, expenses, time and energy through its pilot project – a solar-powered bike – that promises to ensure zero maintenance, zero pollution including noise pollution besides being the ultimate answer to the problem of daily traffic snarls.
The solar-powered bike –a sleek two-wheeler resembling a Scooty – was formally flagged off by Parliamentary Secretary and Advisor, Science and Technology, New and Renewable Rnergy, Art and Culture, Deo Nukhu, at the premises of Department of New & Renewable Energy, Kohima. Explaining the features of the solar-powered bike, Director of NRE, Er. T.S Angami said the bike gives zero carbon-emission and completely eco-friendly, pollution-free and is a sound pollution-free bike that ensures cost-free travels of more than 70 kilometers a day provided the battery is fully charged which can be enhanced once the bikes are fitted with solar module panels thus enabling long-distance journeys or travels.
Explaining the benefits, the Director said the initiative is also expected to contribute towards efforts to cut down carbon monoxide emission, noise pollution, and promote environment-friendly initiatives.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Parliamentary Secretary lauded the initiative of the Department, asserting that with the threat of global warming looming large, everyone should opt for eco-friendly means for sustenance and livelihood and try to promote the same. He congratulated the Department for its numerous activities towards such initiatives through solar lighting, water pump, dryer, biomass, wind mill, etc.
As part of the launch of the initiative, three bikes powered by solar energy were formally pressed into service today. These bikes will be utilised on duty by peons, dak runners and other local duties by NRE staff. The bikes will be charged from NRE office at night where a 6-hour charge will ensure at least 70 kilometers coverage at absolutely no cost.
