Southern Angami area can become a centre excellence in education: Dr Sothu

The Southern Angami area can become an area for centre for excellence in education, Dr Hovithal Sothu Project Director, Task Force for Music and Arts (TaFMA) Nagaland stated on December 14, adding that the region have two top colleges in State along with a good number of schools up to higher education.

There region still have avenues to expand the institutions for agri and allied and technical courses, maintained Dr Sothu, addressing the general meeting (Mechü Krodi Kehou) of the Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) at Council Hall, Kigwema.

Although with small land holdings, the region has congenial atmosphere for education, he added. 

Towards this, he appealed frontal leaders of let academics rise above by not bringing hurdles on the way of educational institutions, rendering support, and strengthening any endeavours for its expansion

Dr Sothu, meanwhile, noted that the Southern Angami villages were lacking behind in the statistics on various fields. 
While, the recognised population of the area according to the census was only 30,561, Sothu viewed that more people were registered in the electoral roll.

He therefore pointed out that leaders need to look into this concern to ensure correct figures and proper census in conscience with the electoral roll is drawn out, with the help of villagers. 

Sothu also noted the lesser number of officers from the region, especially administrative heads of departments, or influential public figures and social workers, and called for relooking and rethinking of its position. He also regretted that the few in place will retire or age soon. 

"It is very difficult to count people who will work for the welfare with knowledge and wisdom and without selfish motive," he opined. 

Meanwhile, dwelling on earning of livelihoods through tourism, he said that sector is very suitable for Southern villages and elaborated on various fields like the Kisama Heritage Village, other heritage villages, homestays, transport, eco tourist treks and sports, food and lodging, guides, among others. He called people to explore this field by having knowledge of our land and history.

SAPO President in his speech encouraged the leaders and team of SAYO to lead with good examples. He called the team to further emulate respect, trust and care among one another. The President said that meticulous thinking and deliverance in words and deeds was also the need of the hour for leaders of the day. 

Zakieleto Tsükrü, outgoing SAYO President delivering the presidential speech gave a brief on the initiatives undertaken by the organisation.

Among others, he shared on initiatives to protect and promote the Dzükou Valley and its vast field of eco tourism to make it a world heritage site.

While, the valley has been made a plastic free zone, he said, adding that a website dedicated to Dzükou Valley has also been initiated.

"The fast developing world is being engulfed with technology and media and we also need to deliver to these standards through robust services," he said.


Earlier, a Folk song (Tati Pfhe) was presented by Jubilant Tribal Group and folk dance by Jakhama Youth Organisation. The Secretary and audit reports were also presented at the meeting. 

Meanwhile, the new tenure of the SAYO will be led by Metekhrielie as President, Khriese Sale and Kechangulie Dul as Vice Presidents and Metevizo Sophie as General Secretary.
