SP leaves Tuensang after public outcry

CCSU claims PHQ acceded to demand for SP’s removal

Under pressure from civil society to quit, Tuensang Superintendent of Police, Amit Nigam left Tuensang district headquarters on Sunday morning, September 5. Nigam was accused of assaulting a naik constable of the Tuensang DEF, under his command, at his official residence on September 2. On September 4, the Confederation of Chang Students Union (CCSU) took to the streets, serving an ultimatum to the Nagaland Director General of Police demanding Nigam’s removal from Tuensang.

According to official sources, Nigam was in Mokokchung as on Sunday evening. With the state Home Department or the Police Headquarters still to make an official statement, it could not be ascertained whether Nigam was asked by the PHQ to move place. Attempts made by The Morung Express to get comments from the PHQ higher ups, including the DGP and ADGP (Adm) were unsuccessful as calls were not responded to.

Only the ADG (HG/CD) SR Saravanan, who also holds charge as Special Secretary (Home), responded but stated that he was on leave.

Meanwhile, other sources stated that the government has acceded to the CCSU demand. C Pongsu, CCSU president, told The Morung Express that the PHQ has “withdrawn” the SP. “There is no official order as yet. They gave us verbal assurance that the DGP has withdrawn the SP yesterday. The SP also left Tuensang,” said Pongsu, while adding, “They (PHQ) told us to wait for a few days.”

The DGP was reportedly in Delhi and, as claimed by the CCSU president, would officially issue an order after he returns.
