St John College holds training on Human Rights

Dimapur, December 10 (MExN): St John College, Dimapur marked Human Rights Day on December 10 by conducting a one-day training programme on Human Rights. The training was partially sponsored by the National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC).
In the morning session, Dr Hitoka H Sumi from Dimapur Publishing House gave an Introduction on Human Rights. It was followed by a talk on Human Rights Institutions in India by Temjensoba, panel lawyer from Dimapur Legal Services.
The speakers highlighted a number of successes in the history of NHRC and explained why they and others are so vital, but also raised the point that Nagaland is one of the few states not having a State Human Rights Commission.
The 30 articles covered by the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights were highlighted though seminar booklet given to all attendees and through a short video.
The third session was led by Limasenla Longkumer from Child Welfare Committee, Dimapur, who highlighted the Rights of Women and Children.
Dr Watinaro Longkumer, (HoD) Department of Psychology and Counselling, St Joseph University, Dimapur, spoke about the ‘Rights of Other Vulnerable Groups,’ drawing attention to groups other than women and children who are often forgotten.
The training was attended by the faculty members and around 125 students of the college. The event was coordinated by Sumita Banik Saha, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics and Tianungla Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, with the assistance of Takasangla Imsong as student coordinator.
