State honours one of its founding fathers

KOHIMA: Former Chief Minister of Nagaland John Bosco Jasokie, who passed away yesterday, was laid to rest with full State honour in the midst of thousands of mourners from all walks of life who had come to pay their last respect to the departed soul.

The National flag was flown at half mast as a mark of respect to the departed leader while business establishment remained closed during the course of the day. 

In a funeral service held here at the Kohima local ground, several dignitaries including Nagaland Governor Shyamal Datta, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio recalled the selfless contribution of Late Jasokie in the creation of Statehood and for bringing about many changes in the State.  

“Jasokie was a moderate Naga leader who was opposed to violence, he along with late T. Sakhrie among others had the courage to oppose those leaders who propagated violence as a means to achieve their goals”, stated S. C. Jamir, Goa’s Governor in a condolence message that was read out at the service.

Nagaland Governor Shyamal Datta said that he remembered Late Jasokie as a man with self belief and also as apostle for peace.

“He has had a long and successful career in the politics of the State”, said Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and termed Late Jasokie as one of the pioneers in Naga politics and one who was instrumental in moulding and guiding the course of the nascent Naga leader, AZ Phizo.

“His contribution to the people of Nagaland has been immeasurable. His rare personal qualities had attracted young and old”, said Opposition leader I. Imkong.

Marina sung a song that Late Jasokie took 20 years to compose. Legion of Mary in which Late Jasokie was a prominent member till his end presented a special number. 

Opening prayer was led by Rev. Rr. Joseph Edakkudan, SDB while Rev. Fr. Seisalhou Carolus Kuotsu read scripture passages from the bible.

State police performed the state funeral parade and followed by procession to burial site at D.Block. Kohima.
