A state level capacity building workshop on curriculum adaptation including Children with Special Needs (CWSN) was organized by Nagaland Education Mission Society (NEMS) Samagra Shiksha in collaboration with NCERT New Delhi was held at SIEMAT SCERT Kohima with Prof Anita Julka NCERT New Delhi as the resource person. Prof Anita Julka in her address during inaugural session said that inclusive education is not only about Children with Special Needs but for whole children to learn and develop themselves. She informed that parents have the rights to send their children to any school as per their wish.
School education & SCERT principal secretary Menukhol John in his address said the inclusive education is something new for the department and everyone has to know and re-learn what are all these about. In this regard, he assured that the department is committed to perform its best to get benefit for the society. He informed that the department is convening meeting with various stakeholders very soon besides with line department. In that line, he said the department wish to tie up with churches for effective implementation and to carry forward.
In the technical session, resource person Anita spoke on “ inclusive education and curriculum” stated that inclusive education is an ongoing process aimed at offering quality education for all while respecting diversity and the different needs and abilities, characteristics and learning expectations of the students and communities, eliminating all forms of discrimination (UNESCO 2008).
She said inclusive education includes vision, placement, 5As (adapted- curriculum, assessment, teaching, acceptance & access), support, resources and leadership. He informed that inclusive education is not a destination but the road on which we travel. Based on the inclusive education, the resource person reminded the participants the need to change the system and not changing the child.
She encouraged the gathering not to use single method of learning but apply various methods and ideas for the students to learn. In this regard, she reminded that many children are having diseases that prevent them to learn. The resource person also spoke on “curriculum adaptation for sensory impairment”, “curriculum adaptation for cognitive impairments, intellectual disability” and “inclusive assessments”.
Earlier, Kevileno Angami, state mission director Samagra Shiksha delivered welcome address. Prof Anita Julka released the video of assessment camp for CWSN May 2019 while vote of thanks was proposed by officer in charge of IE Talitemsu Jamir.
