Dimapur, August 18 (MExN): Department of Health & Family Welfare Nagaland, Kohima today organized and sponsored a district level workshop on “Early Cancer Detection” for Medical Officers of Mokokchung. A press note issued by Olemienla, Media Officer, NRHM, Mokokchung stated that the workshop was held at IDSP Conference hall, IMDH Mokokchung with Lithrongla G Chishi Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung as the chief guest.
During a brief inaugural programme, the chief guest called upon the medical officers to walk an extra mile to save more lives to make our society prosper. On this regard Deputy Commissioner encouraged all the staff to shoulder their duty, saying “responsibility should be towards the duty.” On the other hand the medical officers should take the initiatives to create awareness on the prevention of cancer starting from the grass root level.
Dr. H Hotokhu Chishi, State Programme Officer presenting the thematic presentation and cancer prevalence survey in Nagaland stated that so far state prevalence rate of cancer is 23.37 per lakhs. According to 2010 cancer prevalence survey, there are 463 cancer cases out of which male contributes 322 and female contributes to 141, and said it could raise if detail data and information are collected. In Nagaland the highest prevalence rate is among the Ao with 24.41 per cent which is an alarming issue.
Dr. Hotokhu Chishi also lamented on the poor information on prevalence rates in Government Hospitals and said that almost all the data sources are collected from private hospitals. During his presentation he elaborated on the different cancer found in Nagaland. He said that Cervix is the main killer amongst female and Stomach amongst the male. While describing about the intensity of cancerous status in Nagaland, Dr. Hotokhu Chishi said this killer disease could be prevented and morbidity reduced if we take initiatives in creating awareness from the grass root level. He requested the medical Officers to stay at their posting place to get the actual assessment of cancer.
He also presented that some of the needs are strengthening cancer registry in all health establishments. Prompt reporting system and further study on why higher prevalence persists in certain communities to rule out genetic pre-disposing factors. Dr. Hotokhu also mentioned that to make the Radiotherapy unit at Mokokchung functional at the earliest placement of manpower is under process.
The note also mentioned that the programme was chaired by Dr. SS Akaba Dy. CMO and vote of thanks was said by Dr. Bendangla Medical Superintendent, ImDH, Mokokchung. During the Technical session’s topics on Detection of oral Cancer, Surgical Detection of cancer, cancer detection in head and neck region and gynecological detection of cancer were discussed. The resource person included Dr. Alex Kithan MDS, Dr.Bernard Amer Surgical specialist, Dr. Sakuyuba Imchen Otorhino laryncologist and Dr. Ademla Tinu Gynaecologist.
