The Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Nagaland today released an important survey report on Local/Block Level Statistics for Local Level Planning 2020 under Support for Statistical Strengthening (SSS).

Economics & Statistics Director Y Sacheo Ovung released the report at the Directorate conference hall in the presence of departmental officers and staff.

“This survey report will be the most important document for all leaders to know whether the villages are enjoying the basic required amenities,” Ovung said adding that proper and quality data is the prerequisite for proper planning at different levels.

Lauding the contribution rendered by his officers and staff of the Village Level Development Indicator (VLDI) section despite the challenges of COVID-19 pandemic, Ovung expressed hope that the report would be useful to the administrators, planners, research scholars, stakeholders and general public at large.

The Director also called up the officers and staff of the department and statisticians to devote time to provide reliable statistics to the government because wrong statistics would be very dangerous.

Presenting a brief report on the survey, Economics & Statistics Joint Director Neidilhou Angami said the main objective of the survey was aimed to collect data on the major basic amenities available in all the 1,238 villages of 74 RD blocks in 11 Districts which were recognized and registered under the Rural Development Department, Government of Nagaland, for inclusive system of planning in the State.

In the course of the survey it was found out that one village, i.e., Dikoi village under Chümoukedima Block in Dimapur district was placed under suspension and therefore in total 1,237 villages were surveyed, he said.

Expressing that many government departments provides multitudes of benefits programmes to the villages, he said the Village Development Board (VDB) which functions as an independent body makes every effort to plan and execute various developmental programmes for its community, while in the villages there are different organizations, khels and individuals who come forward to provide basic amenities to the villages.

All these benefits programmes and intervention need to be captured in the form of highly standardized statistical data and to accurately assemble it, we need to have a unified village level database, he said.

As such in this survey, he said, the department has come out with 40 major basic amenities which are available in the villages targeting the survey dateline as on January 31, 2020 across the State.

The survey field work was conducted by the District Economics and Statistics Officers and staff in all the 11 districts, while the data scrutiny, compilation, analysis and report writing was done in the Directorate, he said.

“These are some of the important survey findings which we have come out with after a lot of thorough cross checking, comparison, analyzing, telephonic conversation with the respondents to clear any discrepancies and validating the survey data with the concerned Department administrative data to arrive at the final figures,” he said.

Further, in the survey publication a separate database for the State has also been arranged for the 11 districts and all the 1,237 recognised villages under 74 RD Blocks which will be extremely valuable to the policy formulation at the grassroot level, he said.

Economic & Statistics Officer Visi Yhokha chaired the function while vote of thanks was proposed by ESO David Khutso.
