Unity College, Dimapur observed its 16th Freshers’-cum-Annual Day on July 15 with the Deputy Chief Minister, Y Patton in a attendance as a special guest alongwith a host of his Assembly colleagues. Coinciding with the event, Patton also inaugurated the college’s new academic block, which will house the library, a new computer resource centre as well as regular classrooms.
While inaugurating the new academic block, Patton said that the library should be made accessible to students from other academic institutes, besides opening its doors to academics.
Fully air conditioned, with a seating capacity of 100, the library has over 8700 books covering a vast array of topics and, as per the college authority, it already has the policy of allowing students from other colleges using the library.
The Computer Resource Centre has 100 computers with internet and also serves as centre for CSIR, UGC and NTA exams.
The library was inaugurated by the Minister of Geology & Mining, Soil & Water Conservation, V Kashiho Sangtam, while the Computer Resource Centre was commissioned by Advisor for Power H Tovihoto Ayemi.
Patton, in his address, termed the library and computer centre as great assets that would greatly benefit the students. According to him, Unity College has grown by leaps and bounds given the infrastructure development and the result it produces.
To the students, he said that the student phase is “the most interesting and challenging period of time in our life,” which determines the future. “It is the time where you get tremendous opportunities to explore the world of knowledge, to prepare yourself to face the challenges of life and define your future and as leaders of tomorrow, a huge responsibility lies ahead of you for creating a better society too,” he said.
While calling upon the students to dream for a better society and working hard to turn it into reality, he said, “The purpose of your education must be to engage in life building, character building and assimilation of ideas with an ultimate goal of having an ideal society.”
At the same time, he said that the educational institutions are equally responsible to stir and groom young minds. With the college having the distinction of having produced 8 subject toppers in the Nagaland University undergraduate examinations (2022), he said that the academic achievement itself “is a huge contribution towards creating a better society,” and expressed confidence that Unity College would continue to cater the needs of the students and the faculty with the required modern facilities to become one the best colleges in the state.
