‘Students bear brunt of land dispute’

Dimapur, July 6 (MExN): Villagers of ‘M’ Khel, Akhegho village are appealed to by the Satoi Range Students’ Union to “revoke their stand” over a land dispute that saw the prevention of students from attending classes recently.

According to the SRSU, the villagers of ‘M’ Khel, Akhegho village under Phek prevented about 70 students of Thakiye village. The students have to cross Akhegho village to go to Meluri for their schooling. They were prevented due to a land/border dispute that arose between the two villages, the SRSU stated in a note appended by its president Su-Wuh Toketo. The students’ organization stated that the innocent children have nothing to do with the dispute. However, the action of ‘M’ Khel of Akhegho village has stigmatized the young students, the SRSU lamented.

Calling for normalization of the situation, the students’ organization appealed to the village in concern to “revoke their stand” and also urged the leaders to produce in a written form the revocation. They should make it clear that they will “not mete out such problem in future so that the fear of being handled in this manner in future is erased from the minds of the students.” The SRSU also urged the Pochury Students’ Union to initiate steps to do away with the “ugly atmosphere” that has been created.

The SRSU also clarifies that a news item in this daily on July 5 mentioning ‘Akhegho village and Thakiye village’ should read as “’M’ Khel, Akhegho village and Thakiye village’ and not as appeared. The SRSU regrets the error.
