Kohima | August 31 : Under the platform of sanitation campaign in schools and colleges of Kohima town, students of reputed college in Nagaland- Kohima College today took pledge to maintain good sanitary practices.
The students promised that they will not go for open defecation as this is harmful to the community. The students also pledge to always keep toilet clean and wash hands with soaps after defecation and before eating, will not allow to throw waste matters here and there but always put them in waste bins, will always clean up one’s own mess and not be a part of polluting my town of pride, will motivate fellow friends, parents and relatives to follow good sanitary practices and realizing of goal of a clean, healthy and beautiful Nagaland.
This sanitation campaign was organized by Environment and Sanitation Committee of Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) for its ensuing Platinum Jubilee in April 2012.
Earlier, addressing the campaign, Er. Kevisekho Kruse, director, Water and Sanitation Support Organization (WSSO), PHED, Nagaland questioned students whether they are proud of sanitation situation in the state today. If not, he said each one has to do something today, adding that such way will pay rich dividends and help us all achieve the Nagaland of our dreams.
Er. Kruse said that sanitation and safe drinking water are the key requirements for sustainable development. “Yet sadly, this often remains the most neglected area of human development, because it is often found at the bottom of agenda!.”
WSSO director also called upon the students to stop the habit of throwing wastes here and there and on the road sides and advised them to throw into waste bins only.
Er. Kruse brought notice to the gathering that statistics show that 80% of all our diseases are unsafe water and poor sanitation related. More than 1000 children die every day in India from Diarrhea. 5 of the top 10 killer diseases of children aged under five years are related to water and sanitation, adding that diseases likes Diarrhea, Typhoid, Jaundice, malaria, Hook Worm etc affect the lives of millions of people every day.
He asserted that sanitation helps keep the environment very clean and free from bad smell and flies, which makes the life better and decent, thus enhancing one’s dignity and confidence.
Also speaking on the topic “Christian environmental responsibility,” Moba Konyak, pastor Konyak Baptist Church Kohima said that Christians need to take responsibility to address the environmental issue.
We must find the way not to abuse the earth, he said adding that one must not only consume the resources available but to re-plant the resources,
It is an individual responsibility to create a safe environment, he said.
Kohima College principal C. Khalong Ao challenged the students to be an ambassador and torch bearer to educate the people on environment imbalance and sanitation problem.
He also challenged them to rise up and contribute something for the society.
Earlier, Naga Idol 2.07 Ruokuovotuo entertained the gathering with special number. Er. Repang Longkumer, SE, Kohima PHED Circle –II chaired the function while vote of thanks was proposed by T. Miachieo, HoD, economic department, Kohima College.
Later, WSSO, PHED Nagaland distributed IEC materials to the students to spread corrective messages on sanitation issue in the state.
