MP Supongmeren Jamir addresses the Parliament on March 12.

Kohima, March 13 (MExN): Nagaland’s lone Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), Supongmeren Jamir, raised the 'plight' of the Nagaland Village Guards in Parliament on March 12, urging the Union Home Minister's intervention on the issue.
Speaking during the ongoing second leg of the Parliament Budget Session 2025, Jamir highlighted that despite playing a pivotal role in guarding 120 villages along the Indo-Myanmar border, the Village Guards were being neglected by both the State Government and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
As per a press release from the NPCC, Jamir pointed out that the Village Guards currently receive a monthly salary (honorarium) of just Rs 3000, an annual clothing allowance of Rs 100, and a monthly ration allowance of Rs 60 — reflecting the severe neglect under which they operate.
Accordingly, he urged the concerned ministry to revamp and strengthen the village guards, advocating for their deployment along the border instead of promoting border fencing and free movement restriction policies.
Formally established on March 1, 1957, the village guards are present in six districts of Nagaland - Mon, Tuensang, Kiphire, Meluri, Noklak, and Longleng.
