Dimapur, March 13 (MExN): For the second day today a mob gathered outside East Police Station in Dimapur demanding that persons, held by police in an alleged murder case, be handed over to them and the immediate arrest of those involved in the alleged crime.
The deceased identified as one Vishiho Shohe of Rotomi village was said to have been employed as an accountant in the Education department. He was reportedly found unconscious in a room at Kuda Guest House in Burma camp on Sunday. According to family accounts, he was found bleeding from the mouth, nose and had injury marks on the head and other parts of the body.
After visiting hospitals in Dimapur, the victim was taken to GNRC in Guwahati the same day, where he succumbed to injuries on Tuesday at around 2 am. Relatives said preliminary reports of the post-mortem suggested that assault on the victim took place, leading to his death.
Police apprehended two waiters, all non-locals, of the guest house on Monday. Another person, also non-local, reportedly the manager, was also detained on Tuesday. Since Monday afternoon, a mob had been gathering outside the police station demanding that the suspects be released to them.
On Tuesday, a mob consisting of around 200 persons again gathered by 8:30 am urging the police to expedite the investigation. Alleging that the police was ‘mildly’ investigating the suspects, the mob initially prevented police from taking the suspects to the court to seek judicial remand. The situation nearly turned volatile but for the intervention of some elders who pacified the mob to give time to the investigating authorities. .
It did not end there however as some of the members from the crowd gheraoed the guest house. Till late evening, a strong contingent of policemen was seen guarding the guest house to prevent any untoward incidents. In a later development, at the time of filing this report, an unruly mob stormed the guest house destroying property, notwithstanding the policemen on guard. The rampaging crowd of around 30 people destroyed property estimated at around Rs 10 lakh. Fortunately nobody was injured while no arrests were made. The situation was eventually brought under control.
Police said the investigation was going on ‘well’ but refused to disclose further details.
The body of the victim was brought to Dimapur by road Tuesday night. The funeral would be held on Wednesday at Mishikito village at 9 am.
