The condition of the Civil Hospital at Mon is reportedly in a rundown condition. The hospital which was constructed during the 1970s urgently needs renovation. It still functions according to the 1972 Service Rules which, in theory, provides for five doctors and twenty nurses and fifty beds for a population of more than three lakh people. Dr Lemnei Konyak and his colleagues employed in the hospice during an interview revealed that the question of acquiring sophisticated equipments and other hi-tech facilities is a far cry but at present they are lamenting about the lack of mere basic necessities and other amenities.
Some doctors are said to have approached Konyak legislators in the DAN government for renovation of the hospital several times but their requests were reportedly turned down. Their petition for diverting some amount from the RSVY scheme for the hospital also fell on deaf ears.
Even the Governor of Nagaland, during his visit to Mon in 2004 visited the medical facility and assured to repair the X-Ray machine besides other things but the doctors are yet to hear from him. Dr Lemnyei urges all Mon-based NGOs, if not the government, to realize the plight of the poor who cannot afford even simple medical facilities due to the dilapidated condition of the hospital.
A new building complex is coming up near the old building. It will house offices, operation theatres, ultra sound room, etc. However, much is yet to be done. The active participation of the public, NGOs and the district administration is sought for this initiative to bear fruit.
