DIMAPUR, JUNE 3 (MExN): Three students were selected from Nagaland for the Young Scientist Program. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched a special programme for school children called Young Scientist Programme or Yuva Vigyani Karyakram (YUVIKA), in tune with the government’s vision “Jai Vigyan, Jai Anusandhan”.
They are Kemesanuo Rio from St John’s High School, Diphupar- B, Abhimanyum P Deshmuk and Eyilobeni T Lotha from JNV, Chukitong. Three students from each Indian State and Union Territories participated and got trained by ISRO scientist. A total of more than 100 students participated in the programme.
The program was primarily aimed at imparting basic knowledge on space technology, space science and space application to the young children with the intent of arousing interest in the emerging areas of space activities.
YUVIKA-2019 residential training program was conducted by ISRO from May 13 to 25. During the two week course curriculum, the students were provided with course material which was already pre-loaded on their tablets.
The program included science topics like Rocket Engineering, Environment Science, Astronomy, Space Application, Renewable Energy and also soft skill improvement modules like leadership, team work, communication etc. The program also covered invited talks and experience shared by the eminent scientists, facility and lab visits, hands on training, exclusive session with experts and a feedback session.
The residential training program was held at four ISRO centers. The students from Nagaland along with some other states attended the program at North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC), Shillong. The students from all the states then met at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota.
They got the opportunity to personally visit the launch pad and integration facilities at SDSC, SHAR to understand space port operations. They also visited ISRO laboratories and interacted with scientists. Various topics on space technology, science and application were taught and explained by renowned scientists. The Big Bang theory taught by one of the ISRO scientist helped the students in getting to know more about how the solar system was formed.
KC Bhattacharya, former Director, NESAC taught the students about the history of Indian satellites, types and parts of a satellite. The talk on personality by Dr. Cherla Raja Mouli further helped the students in developing their personality.
ISRO Chairman, Dr K. Sivan gave away the medals to all the participants for being selected and representing their state. ISRO also provided a tablet, T-shirts and bags to all the young scientists.
Programs like YUVIKA might produce a good number of scientists in the coming years and since ‘YUVIKA – 2019’ received more responses than expected, ISRO is considering of conducting this program every year.
Meanwhile, a press release from Johny Abraham, Headmaster of St John’s School, Diphupar on behalf of the students, teachers and parents appreciated the Director School Education for selecting Kemesanuo Rio for YUVIKA – 2019.
