1910 - Korea was annexed by Japan after five years as a protectorate.

1922 - Irish politician and Sinn Fein leader Michael Collins was killed in an ambush by Irish opponents. He was one of the signatories of the 1921 Anglo-Irish treaty.

1978 - President Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya died in his 80s. His exact date of birth was never firmly established.

1998 - Demonstrators in Khartoum attack British embassy after Prime Minister Blair expresses support for U.S. military strikes in Sudan and Afghanistan.

2002 - A painting by Venetian master Titian, worth more than 5 million pounds ($7.6 million), was found in a plastic bag on a London street seven years after it was stolen from Longleat House, western England.
