Torechu urge Eastern Nagas to discourage ‘ism’

SHAMATOR, MAY 12 (MExN): The Eastern Nagaland Gazetted Officers’ Association (EGOA) held its 17th general conference at Shamator town on Friday (May 11) with parliamentary secretary for CAWD, Torechu, as the chief guest and parliamentary secretary for IPR, Economics & Statistics, R Tohanba, as guest of honour.

The two parliamentary secretaries in their speeches urged the gazetted officers of the four districts of Mon, Tuensang, Longleng and Kiphire to work collectively and in co-ordination with each other for overall development of the people and the four districts. “We have confidence that you (ENGOA members) can do good things for the people of the backward districts as you can shape the future of our people. We have to work collectively as only then change will come,” Torechu said.

Torechu said that only when the six brothers (Konyak, Chang, Phom, Yimchunger and Khiamniungan) of the four districts sink their differences and work unitedly can the people of backward districts compete and be at part with other advanced tribes. “Let us discourage ‘ism’ among the six brothers and not give any room for negative criticisms. Let us have the spirit of oneness and listen to each other in order to have peaceful co-existence,” the parliamentary secretary said.

Torechu also urged the gazetted officers to guide and advice not only the masses but also the legislators on many aspects of social and economic development of the backward districts.

Parliamentary secretary for IPR, Tohanba, said ENGOA has a vital role to play in overall development of the four districts since the officers are the “torch bearers and backbone” of the society. He said one of the major roles of ENGOA is to foster peace and understanding among the six tribes. The parliamentary secretary also reminded the officers that as public servants they should follow the motto “work is worship” and perform their duty with religious zeal.

Tohanba said that wherever the officers may be posted, they should perform their duty with sincerity, dedication, integrity and without fear or favour. He said ENGOA can do a lot for the people of the backward districts if they have real concern for their people. He further asked ENGOA members to keep abreast with the times and update themselves in the fast changing world.

Deputy Commissioner, Tuensang district, Mhabemo Yanthan, in a brief presentation on “Effective administration” lamented that some government officers turn out to be mere reporting agencies to the government without initiating any “positive or preventive action against lawlessness, indiscipline and corruption in respective areas.” He said a process of reform, a change in the mindset and attitude is necessary to make the administrative machinery more efficient, more responsive and more sensitive to the problems and aspirations of the society.

The DC said that for any government of the day, the desire is for the administration to ensure effective, efficient and stable administration and also to accelerate the pace of development.

Earlier, ENGOA president B Tingshem Konyak, in his presidential address appealed all members to renew their cooperation and unity for betterment of the society.
