Torture unacceptable: GPRN/NSCN

Dimapur, October 14 (MExN): The GPRN/NSCN has expressed dismay over the inhuman torture meted out to one of its Khapur, Ahoshe Awomi by one Lt. Col. Yarteo Tangkhul of the NSCN/GPRN. A press note issued by the MIP, GPRN/NSCN disclosed that on 14th October morning at around 7:30, “Lt. Col. Yarteo Tangkhul of IM lost all sense of human reasoning and dragged away Khapur Ahoshe Awomi, hailing from Tokugha Village, UT I, who was at Chumukedima on govt. duty”.

According to the MIP note, what followed thereafter was a series of inhuman torture for hours. “The horrific pictures of the victim taken at a hospital are made available to the Naga people to witness with their own eyes the mercilessness nature of the perpetrators”, the MIP note stated. According to the MIP press note, all through the painful physical assault on the hapless victim, “Sumi tribe in particular and GPRN/NSCN was cursed and accused using the most demeaning expletives”. Terming it as an offensive crime committed against fellow human being, it stated that Naga history will not forget such barbaric action.

“If Yarteo Tangkhul is the beast roaming in Nagaland, why should he not be destroyed before another innocent Naga is mauled to death? What is the mental condition of Lt. Col. Yarteo Tangkhul? Is he attempting to reflect the merciless streak of his tribesmen?  Why is he determined to destroy the Covenant of Reconciliation among the Nagas?” stated the MIP press note while raising several queries.

The GPRN/NSCN also noted that since there was an atmosphere of peace and reconciliation and in the light of the latest exhibition of “animal behaviour by Yarteo Tangkhul”, Nagas had “every right to know if, within the IM set-up, there are individuals, a disgruntled party or a tribe which is against Naga reconciliation”. “Plainly speaking, such men are harbingers of misfortune to their own families, relatives and community.

It is extremely painful to know that such desolate men with barren human feelings still claim to be officers serving the nation”. According to the MIP press note, under duress through use of extreme violence, Khapur Ahoshe was forced to sign a bond agreement which stated that he would cease to work for the Nation. “A huge amount would be fined on the relatives if he rejoins the National service”, it was stated. The GPRN/NSCN has declared that any agreement forced under death threat stands null and void.

The GPRN/NSCN has appealed to the Forum for Naga Reconciliation to “check if there is a group within the IM who are oblivious of the Covenant of Naga Reconciliation”. The GPRN/NSCN stated that if FNR was “accepted by all rank and files within the IM, Lt. Col. Yarteo Tangkhul must be brought to justice for hurting the sentiments of all Nagas who are committed to the Covenant of Reconciliation”.  The GPRN/NSCN also appealed to the Tangkhul Naga Long and various Tangkhul Civil societies in Nagaland and beyond to act against what it termed as “bloodstained tribesmen who continue to tarnish the image and integrity of peace loving Tangkhuls”.

The GPRN/NSCN also reminded that the ink on the paper signed by three Naga political groups on 18th September 2010 has still not dried and that the positive words of the top leadership echoes like sweet music in the ears of the Naga people. The Joint Working Group (JWG) met only on Saturday 9th Oct. 2010 to further strengthen the covenant of reconciliation. The GPRN/NSCN pointed out that it had so far exhibited “great patience and commitment to the Covenant of Reconciliation”.
