Kohima: The traditional painting works from different parts of the states, have evoked high admiration from the Governor of Mizoram AR Kohli and Governor Nagaland Shyamal Datta in the three day National Level Traditional Painting Workshop that commenced here this morning.
Inaugurating the workshop, Kohli called upon the artists to avail the opportunity in exposing their skills in the field of art and culture, and in getting commercial values, as India has risen in the international scene in this field.
He also urged upon them to concentrate, nurture and to help in exploiting the situation as an economic activity.
Datta said that the workshop has given opportunities to the artists of the North East region to foster dialogue, enabling them to get a better understanding and perspective and to convey a message of the North-East region for the future benefits of Ministry of art & culture.
Datta described painting as the most expressive art form of creativity. He said that an artist needs peace of mind to conceptualize the theme. “Without peace of mind, painting to peace or peace to painting cannot be a natural process”, he maintained.
Regretting that the share of North East in the field of traditional painting is very negligible, Datta opined that a platform must be provided to our talented artists in the fast emerging and booming market. He was of the view that unless a proper platform is provided, the role of trusteeship in depicting artistic imagination of our society would not be carried forward.
Datta expressed his optimism that the workshop would create an awakening about the emerging world of painting and artists.
Chief Secretary, Lalhuma, IAS, said that promotion of traditional painting was necessary as all the tribes of India have rich traditions. He termed the workshop as “very timely,” as the rich traditions of the North East was laying dormant and not properly documented.
Director Art & Culture, Kevinino P Meru proposed the vote of thanks.
Artists from Nagaland, Arunachal, Assam, Tripura and from the zonal centres are participating in the painting workshop. Participants from Manipur and Mizoram are expected to reach today.
