Eleven road mishaps reported, two killed

Calling in the New Year did not fare well for quite a many revelers, ending in tragedy for two, as Dimapur reported as many eleven road related mishaps on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The toll could have read higher had other mishaps, which went unreported, been included. The accidents involved 18 vehicles, including three-wheelers and two-wheelers. For the interest of statisticians, most of the accidents occurred at the Chumukedima stretch of NH 29, starting from Burma camp.      

Traffic police had a plainly ‘field night’ as vehicular accidents, all related to rash and negligent driving, were reported at regular intervals all through the night, extending onto the next day. The total number of people injured could not be ascertained.

The one which resulted in two deaths occurred in the wee hours of January 1 at Walford at around 4:20 am. The deceased, one woman and a man, were riding a ‘Ford Figo’ which rammed into the back of a stationary truck parked at the side of the road. The man, said to be the one on the wheels was killed on impact and the woman died in hospital. In their 30’s and 20’s, they were identified as Kevimedo Shuya and Asieno Shuya of Chumukedima. Two other occupants survived the crash with severe injuries. 

The first accident, according to the police diary was reported from 4th Mile at 8:30 pm on December 31.  It involved a van and a car though nobody was seriously injured. Half an hour later, traffic cops had to rush to Purana Bazaar to attend to another mishap involving a motor-cycle. Its lone rider was said to have lost control of the bike and fell. The rider escaped with minor injuries. The third accident was reported from Burma Camp at 10:00 pm involving a motor-cycle and a van. 

One and a half hour later, between 11:30-11:40 pm, two more mishaps were reported – one at 3rd Mile and the other at Naharbari. In the former, two Assam registered cars were involved, while in the latter, a three-wheeler collided with a car. The Passengers riding the autorickshaw sustained injuries. 

Then at 1:00 pm and later at 2:00 pm, two minor mishaps occurred – one near East Police Station and the other at Burma camp. In both the incidents, the drivers, who escaped unhurt were said to have lost control of their vehicles. It was followed by the 4:20 am tragedy at Walford where two persons died. 

After a lull of sorts, three more accidents were reported in the evening of January 1. Two persons sustained injuries in one of the mishaps which occurred at around 3:00 pm. It involved a car and an autorickshaw. The second mishap of the evening involved a truck and a car, while the latter involved a lone car, both Assam registered. No injuries were reported in the latter two.  

In comparison, Christmas Eve was much quieter, during which only three vehicular accidents were recorded by police. No loss of life was also reported. In the period starting January 2011 till date, 43 road related accidents has claimed 43 lives in Dimapur district.
