Training on diversified farming practices in Kiphire district

Kiphire, November 22 (MExN): Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kiphire conducted a training programme on diversified farming practices for doubling farmers’ income under phase three of Krishi Kalyan Abhiyan.

Along with the training, distribution of seeds were also conducted at Longthonger, Phelungre and Sangtsoze village under Kiphire district on November 9, 10 and 15 with Dr N Khumdemo Ezung, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK, Kiphire and Temjenna Jamir, SMS DAMU, KVK Kiphire as the resource persons.

According to updates from the KVK on Monday, Dr Ezung laid emphasis on taking up double cropping wherein rearing of crops like toria and pea can be profitably taken up after the harvest of terrace rice. Elaborating further, he said that instead of leaving the field fallow, crops like toria which require very less moisture and management but provide good harvest and returns can be sown to supplement farmers’ income. He also encouraged the farmers to take up legume crops like pea after harvest of rice as legumes add nutrients to the soil, making it sustainable.

A detailed session on packaging and practices of toria and pea was held with farmers actively interacted with the scientists, the release stated. Temjenna Jamir spoke on integrated farming system (IFS) where she presented different IFS models and encouraged the farmers with resources and feasibility to use the system and obtain continuous income. 

During the programme, 100 kgs of toria seeds variety TS-36, 120 kgs of field pea variety Aman and 40 kgs of garden pea seeds variety Arkel were distributed to the participants along with the request to produce seeds so as to meet the seed requirement in the next season, the release stated.
