Training on exploring potential of underutilized crops held

Dimapur, March 11 (MExN): ICAR Nagaland Centre, Medziphema conducted training on ‘Exploring the Potential of Underutilized Crops in NEH Region’ under AICRP on Potential Crops from March 8-10.

In the inaugural session, Dr Harendra Verma, Scientist (Plant Breeding and Genetics), and Dr Christy Sangma (Soil Science) gave an overview of the training programme and emphasized the importance of underutilized potential crops. They also urged the farmers to increase the area and production of underutilized potential crops such as perilla, jobs tear, faba bean, winged bean, adzuki bean and buckwheat.

During the valedictory session, Dr LK Baishya, Joint Director in-charge briefed the farmers about the nutritional aspects of potential crops and an option for substituting the some of the staple food crops. Lectures related to potential crops production techniques, integrated nutrient management, integrated disease management, integrated pest management was held during the training programme. At the end of the training programme, certificates and agri-inputs (seeds and fertilizers) were distributed to the trainees by the Joint Director in-charge, ICAR Nagaland Centre to the 25 participants who attended the training.
