Kohima, May 24 (MExN): Training on localization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through village functionaries for RD Blocks of Kohima, Jakhama, and Sechu Zubza Kohima District was held at Indian Red Cross Society Building, Kohima on May 24.

According to a DIPR report, the resource person, Principal ETC Phek, SIRD, Dr Kedise Pucho emphasized on the concept of SDGs. He said that the 17 SDGs and their 169 targets were adopted by the member states of the United Nations in September 2015 where the local governments have a crucial role to play in achieving the SDGs and the twin objectives of the Panchayati Raj system as envisaged by the Indian Constitution were to ensure local economic development and social justice. 

He stated that the Panchayats were expected to play an effective role in the planning and implementation of functions related to 29 subjects enlisted in the Eleventh Schedule of the Constitution. 

Pucho also said Gram Panchayats (GPs) across the country are preparing gram panchayat development plans (GPDP) presenting an opportunity for the GPs to Synchronize their plans with SDGs. He mentioned that sustainable goals and Gram Panchayat Development were about improvement in the economic and social condition of people and places, linked to addressing poverty, education, health, employment, infrastructure and facilities, basic amenities like housing, drinking water, Sanitation, and also about equity and enhancing human abilities. He also spoke about India's SDGs Vision 2030.

Earlier, the handbook on Sustainable Development Goals and Gram Panchayats was distributed to all the participants. All the village council and ward chairman and VDB secretaries under RD blocks of Kohima, Jakhama, and Sechu Zubza attended the training.

The program was chaired by BDO Sechu-Zubza, Kevilhouse, Welcome address was delivered by BDO Jakhama, Khovi Thaprü, and the vote of thanks was pronounced by BDO Kohima, Celin Thol.
