Dimapur, March 25 (MExN): The Tenyimi Students' Union Dimapur (TSUD) on Thursday voiced concern over the misuse of social media platforms and spreading of misinformation and hatred.
While acknowledging the benefits of digital empowerment, TSUD said that it has also brought in challenges.
The reckless abuse of social media has posed a serious dilemma of striking the balance between freedom of speech and expression, awareness, empowerment and the obligation to be responsible and accountable, so that social media platforms do not become vehicles to commit crime, incite hatred or extremism, it stated.
Taking a strong exception to posts, comments, screenshots etc. challenging each other using names of tribes, TSUD asserted that such people should be booked and be held accountable for any untoward incident.
It further stressed that educated social media users are expected to be responsible and ensure that an individual’s post or comments does not hurt the sentiments of others or incite communal hatred.
TSUD cautioned all its members to be cautious while posting or commenting on social media platforms and stated that it will not be responsible for any member trying to instigate or incite violence.
The Union also appealed to everyone to refrain from posting derogatory comments.
“At this crucial juncture, we Nagas should stand together with spirit of oneness, empathy and understanding and not let some few individuals with vested interest be the end of us all,” TSUD urged.
