Two Assam Rifles personnel were killed and five others injured when unidentified gunmen ambushed a convoy of the 33 Assam Rifles on Friday evening at Nambol Sabal Leikai, under Nambol Police Station in Bishnupur district of Manipur, police said late this evening.
According to an Assam Rifles press note, the incident occurred around 5:50 pm when a vehicle-based column of troops from the Patsoi Company Operating Base was moving towards the Nambol Company Operating Base. The convoy came under heavy fire from unidentified assailants on the highway in the denotified area of Manipur.
In the exchange of fire, Nb Sub Shyam Gurung (58) and Rifleman G.D. Kashav (29) of the 33 Assam Rifles lost their lives. Five other personnel sustained injuries and were evacuated to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, where they are reported to be stable.
So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the ambush. Security forces have launched extensive search operations to trace those involved, the press note stated.
Condemning the attack, the Governor of Manipur described it as a “heinous act of violence.” He expressed profound grief over the loss of two soldiers and extended condolences to the bereaved families, while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. “Such acts will not be tolerated and will be met with the strongest resolve to safeguard peace and stability in the region,” the Governor said.
The ambush has sparked shock and concern across Manipur, with authorities tightening counter-insurgency measures as investigations continue.
