ULBs clamp down on price hike

Dimapur, March 24 (MExN): Amid the indefinite lockdown effected all over the country, people are resorting to panic buying and hoarding despite government orders which also allow grocery shops and essential commodity sellers being exempted from the lockdown.

The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) and Zunheboto Town Council (ZTC) in separate statements, have warned sellers who are taking advantage of the situation and selling goods above the fixed rates.

8 caught selling overpriced vegetables

The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) on Tuesday informed that 8 vegetable vendors were found selling items at a higher rate/price.  They were caught during a check conducted by the DMC in the markets under its jurisdiction.

Appropriate action as per provisions of law is being initiated against the defaulters, the DMC said.

All the whole sale dealers and retailers of essential commodities and perishable goods have been directed not to indulge in any illegal activity of hoarding or selling the items at higher rate/price, DMC warned.

Licenses of defaulting groceries seized

Continuing its surprise checking of essential commodities shops in different locations against the reported escalation of prices of different food items and daily use goods, the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) on Tuesday seized the licenses of defaulting groceries in PWD Colony, Officers’ Hill and Tinpatti Pezielietsie.

The KMC said that it would continue to conduct such checking to restrain shop-keepers from hiking prices of essential commodities.

Charging above fixed MRP rates will invite stern action, it warned the defaulters. It also said that  the KMC Inspector  can be contacted at 9436001900 for further information.

ZTC cautions

Meanwhile, the Zunheboto Town Council (ZTC) has issued an order directing all shops and business establishments under Zunheboto town to sell all essential commodities at the prescribed MRP. Hoarding/selling of essential commodities at exorbitant prices is strictly prohibited and strict action will be initiated against the violators along with penalty in accordance to relevant laws, the ZTC warned.
