‘Understand society’s deeper soul’: Niketu Iralu to MBBS students

NIMSR Kohima welcomes 3rd batch with induction ceremony

The Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (NIMSR) Kohima today conducted an induction programme cum freshers’ day for 3rd batch (1st Phase MBBS students) at Academic Block, NIMSR, Phriebagie, Kohima.

Niketu Iralu, social worker and activist for Healing and Restoration of Lives and Society graced the occasion as the special guest.

“From the knowledge you acquire from your research and the medical service you give to human beings every day, you understand better than others the deeper soul and spiritual surgery our society needs in equal measure,” he told the MBBS students.

He said that the deeper need in “our crisis has to be understood and addressed.”

Stating that he was privileged to be representing KTB (Kezekevi Thehou Ba), a group of Angamis from diverse fields who are trying to learn and promote the best ways of caring for our fragile society’s proper growth and development at this time of unprecedented upheaval, he said “Therefore, we are most interested in the crucial role of NIMSR for our society’s proper growth.”

“Each one of us is so important- not just a few people, social leaders, religious and political leaders,” Iralu said.

He stressed on need to praise God and obey what God “tell us to do and to be.”

Iralu also told the MBBS students to exercise determination and commitment while performing their role.

S. Tainiu, secretary, Health & Family Welfare & DDA NIMSR told the MBBS students to focus on core values of compassion, hard work, integrity and lifelong learning in serving humanity.

Stating that there will be challenges as well as opportunities ahead, she said told them to cultivate a deep sense of dedication as medical profession demands commitment, discipline and compassion from the beginning.

Years of study lay the foundation to take critical decisions in future often involving matters of life and death, Tainiu said.

By approaching studies and clinical training with sincerity and willingness to learn, young medical student will not only shape their career but also contribute to the well being of the society, she said.

She asked the MBBS students to be innovative in transforming health care with fresh perspectives.

Forward thinking mindset helps shape a healthier future and inspires in the medical community to strive for progress, she said.

Medicines cure diseases but only doctors can cure patients, she said adding that a good doctor’s words, touch will help in easing the pain and can be as powerful as medicine.

‘Treat all individuals with dignity and respect’
Tainiu told the students to uphold the high ideals and principles of medical ethics ensuring that the patients wellbeing is always the priority.

Stating that medical sciences is one of the most rapidly evolving the world, she said that new research constantly uncovers better ways to diagnose, prevent and treat diseases.

She asked the MBBS students to treat all individuals with dignity and respect regardless of their background.

Be an agent of change and recognise the existing healthcare disparities, especially in rural areas, she insisted.  

“Be a ray of hope.  Doctors are consider as next to God for their ability to save lives and alleviate suffering. Bring smiles to the face of suffering humanity,” she said.

Wear the white coat with dignity and pride, remembering it is a calling that offers a unique combination of intellectual and moral interests found in no other profession, she said.

Dir Prof Soumya Chakraborty, Director cum Dean, NIMSR welcomed the MBBS students of  2025 batch and also congratulated the batches of 2023 and 2024 for going good work.

She urged upon the MBBS students to emphasise the importance of  persistence and  self improvement, urging them to  embrace the process “no matter how difficult it may seem, let  you involve, focus  of the progress you  made and will make  and the growth yet  to come since the best  way to predict the future is to create as Abraham Lincoln  had said.”

She also asked them to always maintain an optimistic outlook even in the face of difficulty or adversity as “You have to transform challenges into opportunities.”

Dr Mhalevilie Sote, Associate Pastor, BRCK prayed for NIMSR. Welcome address was delivered by Avibo Yeptho while vote of thanks was proposed by Lilly Ezung, TC, NIMSR. The programme as also marked by Mr & Miss Freshers’ contest, special numbers, instrumental piece and dance.
