‘Unfair means’ alleged in JEE selection

Dimapur, July 17 (MExN): The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) selection system has come under scrutiny again, this time from medical students who have alleged “unfair means” in the allotment of seats for the medical section.

Nagaland Medical Students’ Association (NMSA) issued a letter to the Media seeking clarification from the government authorities on what they said is “privilege of superseding multiple ranks” given to “candidates under reservation” rather than the more deserving and merit-won students. In fact, the NMSA disclosed, this is the second such instance.

The NMSA stated that “candidates under reservation” have been unfairly given the privilege of superseding multiple ranks “in contradiction to Technical Education Director A Kathipri statement of a fair and transparent selection and nomination of JEE candidates through the sole criteria of merit.”

“Unfair means” in allotting JEE seats has taken place, the NMSA stated, depriving deserving candidates the privilege of choosing JEE seats according to their merit list. The anomaly has reoccurred despite the existence of the Common Selection Board comprising 12 members from different departments.

The NMSA has asked the Directorate of Technical Education to clarify on a number of matter: “If the selection of JEE candidates are done strictly through merit basis, why students under reservation were allowed to supersede their merit rank displacing those who rightfully deserve to hold their current deserved ranking?”

The NMSA also queried why “this superseding of ranks” was done without any prior information to the public. The directorate is also asked to clarify under what provision “these rank incursions” were allowed.

“To our displeasure and disappointment we are aware of the same incident being repeated in the last JEE selection. At the time, the formalities of admission of the students in question were completed and as such we refrained from pursuing the matter with regrettable decision to abstain from notifying the public in general,” the NMSA stated.

The organization also mentioned what it said is the issue of “false and fabricated documents.” The truth is, the NMSA said, false and fabricated documents are impossible to prove when officially furnished.

Nonetheless, the Directorate of Technical Education is asked to respond at the earliest. The letter was appended by president of the NMSA Emmanuel Patton and general secretary Kipito Awomi.
